From Andrew Hodges Your Christchurch Ward Conservative Councillor
January 2003 No 87
The pressure on the ward by developers is increasing with applications and enquiries coming to the Planning Department of the Council in unceasing volume. Generally residents tell Andrew Hodges and David Hunter that they like the environment throughout the ward. Yet inflated offers for homes are being made, with developers wanting to shoe horn large houses onto tiny plots.
Thanks to Conservative instance in holding out against the Government Office in the South East, Guildford has been able to keep the limited protection on low density areas in the new Borough Plan now to be adopted.
Planning applications can be turned down by the planning committee (such as in Tangier Road) – yet go to appeal. What can you do to help? Write to the Planning Inspector with objections.
Where there are unwanted redevelopment plans please write to the planning office of the Council. Councillors now work with a code of practice when discussing specific applications once submitted until the meeting of the planning committee – so residents’ voices must be heard

Recycling in practice
Andrew
Hodges is ready to take part in finding out what really happens in the Borough
with recycling, as some residents in the Borough have seen.
With recycling being a high priority to many people and with the rate of recycling in Guildford so low, Andrew Hodges decided to see for himself how the collection of green boxes of recyclables operates. He spent a morning with one of the Council’s crews and collected and emptied green boxes with them. He saw how differently residents dealt with their recyclables.
He was amazed at how some residents neatly separate their recyclables, while others do not even rinse out their cans. It was very valuable to experience the practical problems of our collection team.
