PARTY CONFERENCE

Andrew Hodges and Guildford representatives discuss local issues with Party Chairman, Michael Ancram MP

THE THREAT OF A SLYFIELD incinerator may never have arisen had there been a Conservative Government in power .

At the Conservative Party Conference, Guildford Councillors heard Environment Spokesman Damian Green say, "Conservatives will tackle the big global green issues, but we also believe that sustainability begins at home. That’s why we have a recycling policy significantly greener and more radical than any other party’s."

"Conservatives have always said ‘Trust the People.’ I think we can trust them to be green, if we offer them the chance. So we will offer everyone free recycling collections from their doorstep. Labour offers hundreds of new incinerators across the countryside.
I know the British people will prefer our solution.
"

Guildford Conservatives have already instigated a pilot scheme in the Borough, which if adopted across Surrey, would be likely to make the Slyfield incinerator not viable.

PLANNING – Cranley Road

THE APPLICATION for four houses at Pitfold Cranley Road has been withdrawn. Andrew Hodges will be particularly vigilant over any new application.

BOXGROVE SCHOOL

David Hunter keeping in touch writes                       Just a brief point on the Slyfield debate. With regard to the waste generated; a comparable city that I lived in had an excellent means of reducing household waste. Collection areas were set up within a short walk for all inhabitants to leave discarded household items- rather like our bottle and newspaper banks, but coping with a larger range than even Slyfield accepts now. Unfortunately it will not work here in Guildford due to selecting suitable collection points and the behaviour of a minority of out inhabitants.                                                                                                                            Two interesting points for those of us who live in this ward. The prices of our properties continue to rise – look at the new houses in St Omer Road. It may be good for us who live here, but heaven help those starting out on the housing ladder. How can they afford to live in or near Guildford, unless the council is rigorous in granting planning permissions with an inclusion of affordable housing in sufficient numbers to meet targets.                    The other point is to praise the key workers in our ward ho help to keep the heels of modern Society running smoothly. Among these people are the local postmen, the garbage collectors, the road sweepers and those at our London Road Railway Station, which I use regularly during the week. Or am I just lucky? I know that when one of them is on holiday, it never proceeds without problems

Andrew Hodges is willing to see residents at mutually convenient times. If you wish to meet with him to discuss any matter, please do not hesitate to contact him.
