CONSULTATION

GUILDFORD RESIDENTS ARE BEING ASKED HOW THEY THINK GUILDFORD COUNCIL SHOULD BE RUN. As a result of proposed Government legislation Guildford Council is consulting on the way it should be run. A trial of a ‘cabinet’style Council will start in September. Over the next months consultations will continue. Once the Local Government Bill is enacted we shall know what is allowed. Andrew Hodges has been concerned that Guildford Council should be run as democratically as possible. Guildford Conservatives are willing to take part in the trial, but are not prepared to take collective responsibility for decisions against which they fought and voted and which would compromise our accountability to residents.

Do you have strong views as to how the Council is run? Or are you interested mainly in the policies it pursues?

Andrew Hodges consults at the Council’s Open Day.

GRAFFITI

GUILDFORD LIDO IS MARRED BY GRAFFITI. Andrew Hodges wrote to Railtrack about LondonRoad Station, and supports fully the initiative of the Safer Surrey Partnership to crack down on graffiti.

David Hunter keeping in touch writes : Comments on local transport matters, the voluntary sector and ward planning applications are topical.

I often  wonder what would happen if all voluntary work became paid, especially with the latest employment regulations. I am involved in a fair amount of voluntary work to keep myself busy. – Just a thought.

Planning applications are an area where it still surprises me that developers seem to refuse to listen to local concerns. The experience my neighbours and I had with the developer who built alongside me is different as he discussed our concerns and did his best to resolve the problems with a pleasant result.

The idea of a monorail system has again been raised. But where can we fit this into our narrow roads unless we have a bypass all round Guildford to handle the through traffic. York Road/ London Road traffic lights – will they ever be clear of work for more than two weeks? I can at least cycle around the obstacles but can all our elderly folk?

Andrew Hodges is willing to see residents at mutually convenient times. If you wish to meet with him to discuss any matter please do not hesitate to contact him.
