PARKING Phase 4a

THE ARRANGEMENTS for the parking restrictions in Ennismore Avenue are being amended to reflect the residents views. These will now be implemented. They will remain under review, and could affect the proposals for phase 4b.

PLANNING

THE APPLICATION AT ELMDON, London Road, for houses at the rear, was rejected as it needed scaling down to be acceptable locally. It has now gone to appeal. Andrew Hodges maintains a keen interest is the progress.

THE PLANS BY LANESBOROUGH SCHOOL to develop into Markham House have been approved. The agreement for a maximum number of pupils will now be monitored by Guildford Council, and the school will have a transport plan, in order to reduce the impact of traffic in the area.

ALCOHOL

GUILDFORD CONSERVATIVES VIEW THAT THERE SHOULD BE A BYLAW to prevent drinking in public streets was overwhelmingly supported by the Citizens’ panel 74% in favour and only 8% against. We shall continue to press for an early application and implementation if a bylaw, and fight obstacles placed in the way.

RECYCLING

GUILDFORD COUNCIL HAS NOW AGREED THAT A PILOT for collecting recyclables from homes will start in April. This is despite Liberal Democrat opposition to a pilot scheme - Guildford Conservatives are getting things done.

David Hunter keeping in touch writes                                                              As our roads continue to become multi-coloured, I have noticed a recent report on cycle lanes. This was based on research at Milton Keynes which has one of the world’s largest urban cycle infrastructures. The reality of cycle lanes on roads with paths has shown that the accident level was about 25% compared to 9% on the roads with no paths. Does this account for the few cyclists I see on roads such as Shalford/Guildford which has an excellent cycle path behind the hedge?                                                  We now have the police, issuing fixed penalties on the older cyclist trying to stay alive on pavements past dangerous road sections while the tearaways race along pavements past the same policeman who knows they will not stop. Likewise the same happens on the pavement along London Road where there are three cycle paths in places. My experience of local cycle accidents means no prosecution of the motorist so we cannot win on our bikes. There seems no easy answer for the cyclist.
