SPEED LIMIT

DESPITE OBJECTIONS the speed limit will become 3OMPH

REBALANCED ?

THE LIBERAL DEMOCRAT GROUP on Guildford Council has reduced by one. Since the last ISSUES their group leader of last year, Nigel Sutcliffe, has resigned from the Liberal Democrat group. In a written statement he wrote,' behaviour this decision has been brought on by the of leading Liberal Democrats behaving like spoilt brats and drama queens - but this is how they have behaved for the past ten years.' He now has gone independent, and the Council now comprises: -Liberal Democrats 1 9, Conservatives 17, Labour 6 and Independents 3.

ALCOHOL ABUSE

G UILDFORD CONSERVATIVES WELCOME THE POLICE INITIATIVE to crack down on alcohol related nuisances. This augers well for our pushing forwardwith our manifesto policies for a by-law banning public consumption of alcohol. This has been agreed by the Council to now go through the consultation procedure, including the Citizens' Panel.

THE COLLECTION OF RECYCLABLES from homes has been delayed again by the Liberal Democrats, but should go ahead eventually next year.

SPECTRUM

P LANS TO EXPAND THE CAR PARK at Spectrum have been defeated as Andrew Hodges believed it was a step too far, andpushed for a new site for the park and ride users should be found as a matter of urgency.

David Hunter keeping in touch writes:

Changes continue to be made to traffic control in an attempt to get us all to walk, cycle or use public transport.

A dangerous additional pedestrian crossing at Debenhams, is an example. Those who approved this measure should remember their approval after the first serious accident which will probably involve a harassed mother with children. I am an enthusiastic cyclist, past motorcyclist and now a motorist with walking into Guildford experience. I have experience on how other countries handle these problems from living in a variety of overseas places.

0 to be on one of these Committees who agree these decisions with no thoughts except a short sighted immediate solution. Traffic and Safety Engineering was always one of my options but never taken up.
