GuildfordConservatives reject the idea of licensing casinos
Following public consultation, the Conservative Executive of Guildford Council rejected the idea of applying to be allowed to issue new licences to operate casino premises.
The results of a number of consultations were consistent; the responses were as follows:
To the question " Do you want a casino in Guildford?"
the statistically sound Citizens’ Panel replied
Yes 16% No 83% abstain 1%
the response to the council’s general questionnaire available to individuals was
Yes 5.3% No 94.4%
the response to the council’s general questionnaire available to organisations was
Yes 4.8% No 90.5%
the response from the GBC online forum , a neutral, non-partisan, non-profit citizen based website moderated by a University of Surrey research student
Yes 12% No 88%
As the decision meant no change in policy there was no need for it to be resolved by the Council, However, at the subsequent Council meeting, the Executive’s decision was endorsed by the Liberal Democrat, Labour and independent councillors.

A new CCTV van is being used in Guildford to help stop people littering the streets. Guildford Borough Council is using the equipment to educate people about dropping rubbish and to help catch the culprits in the act. This technology will help to make people understand the effect of their actions. Offenders will be shown a video recording of their actions and given the chance to correct them. Those that refuse to clean up their mess may then be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice. If they refuse to pay, then evidence from the tape will be used in court Filming in high- risk areas, the van will also help prevent fly-tipping, allowing the council’s Environmental Enforcement Team to identify and prosecute offenders. It will also collect evidence against vehicles with badly loaded waste that cause spillages on the road. The new CCTV van is part of the borough council’s continuing campaign against littering and fly-tipping. Guildford is a beautiful town and the council is dedicated to maintaining its reputation. Guildford Conservatives keep control of Council tax Yet again Guildford Conservatives have kept the Borough element of Council tax less than the previous two years, and well below that of the previous LibDem led adminstration at 2.48%. We have just been given a glowing report from the Audit Commission on our providing value for money for you the council tax payer. Despite this low tax rise, the Council’s 2006-07 budget includes provision for extra services including plastics recycling trials for many homes , resources to improve further the service from the planning department, and funds to pay for concessionary bus fares for older people. New parking restrictions These came into force on 3 April. Much effort has been put in to arrive at the best concensus for the new parking restrictions. Andrew Hodges knows it is not 100% to everyone’s liking - it was inevitable that this would be the case. However, with general co-operation’ we hope to see it operate without too much aggravation.

Civic Hall replacement- at London Road or University? Please return to GCA FREEPOST G19, Guildford GU12BR |
Forgotten
facts about the Civic Hall
It was closed, because the Liberal Democrats had suppressed the need for spending at least £81,000 on health and safety to keep it open. It was costing some £400,000 a year to run, with an ever worsening programme. The Liberal Democrats estimate of £2 million was a net cost after sales of assets. Figures of £20,000,000 which are being banded about are gross costs. When replacement was first discussed, the Council rejected the idea of refurbishment, as a new build was going to give much better value for money. Guildford Conservatives want a value for money solution. Whether the delay, caused by failed legal action against the council, changes this, remains to be seen.
