Parking in the ward - extending the CPZ

After extensive consultations, the proposals for the extension of the local carparking zone were published in a public notice in September. Various objections continued to be made. It is clear that this sort of issue is one where not everybody can be satisfied- one neighbour wants one solution and next door the view might be quite different. Andrew Hodges has listened to the varying views and had discussions with the parking officers. Unless there are major delays at the Local Committee in December, the final result will be implemented early next year and hopefully the majority of residents will be broadly content.

South & South East in Bloom

These awards resulted in Guildford winning a silver gilt medal. Guildford’s silver gilt award was the highest in its ‘large town / small city’ category in the closely-judged competition - no gold award was made in this category.

In the Best Public Park section Stoke Park won a silver, as did the Riverside Park, which came top in the county park category. Guildford was up against stiff competition, and the close working relationships of the skilled individuals that there are in Guildford have produced a colourful and attractive borough of which we can all be proud.

Delivering our key priorities

Last year the Council made a grant of £100,000 towards the rebuilding of the Waterside Centre on Bellfields, in the adjacent Stoke Ward. The new facilities have now been opened and allow the Wey Kayak Club, the prominent club at the Centre, to continue to maintain and develop a wide range of activities for disadvantaged and diverse groups, including futher links with Christ’s College, Surrey Sports development Unit, Surrey Sports Partnership and the Borough Council.

More recently the Council has set aside £24,000 to fund the refurbishment of the Park Barn Martial Arts and Healthy Living Centre, in order to meet health & safety standards and to make the building fully functional for the local community.

Both of these projects are in an area of the town where they can be used to achieve social cohesion - ensuring our diverse community can live in safety and with dignity, supporting a range of activities and facilities.
