Stadium proposal
As most residents are aware, because of the closeness of my home to the location of the proposed stadium I am deemed to have a "prejudicial interest" in it and have been prevented from representing residents as I would have wished.
The Planning Committee unanimously rejected the planning application. The Executive unanimously refused to sell part of Stoke Park for the project. Many residents have written to the Planning Inspector opposing the appeal against the refusal of planning consent. The deadline for submissions to the Planning Inspector has now passed - yet the Public Enquiry will not be until May next year!
So more public money will now have to be spent on a planning application on Council owned land, which the Council has refused to sell. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A directly elected Mayor - facts
Civic Hall delay/Stadium on Stoke Park and the proposal for a large Casino, all emanate from what is effectively the same source. And now there is a petition for a referendum for an elected Mayor for Guildford, from a similar source. You may have read in the local paper, when the stadium idea was rejected for Stoke Park, this was a threat, in the mistaken belief that, were there an elected Mayor, he/she could overturn these decisions - please be clear, only Guildford Borough Council is in a position to sell the land - and that has been firmly rejected. A directly elected Mayor would place the authority, currently with the nine strong Executive, in the hands of one person. The present system may not be perfect, but this would be a whole lot worse - and add an additional on-going cost to the council tax, to say nothing of the £80,000 a referendum would cost.

Parking in the ward
The initial consultation again had a response of over 40% of residents, and in most roads the residents views were pretty clear, and details of the scheme, as to parking bays etc., are now being consulted on. If these can be readily agreed, progress should be reasonably quick to the statutory consultation which involves more than residents alone. If, however, there are major objections not previously considered, this could hold the process up. Andrew Hodges is aware of the strong feelings within the area to have the controlled parking zone extended in the centre of the ward, and hopes that a generally acceptable scheme will be achieved.
